Abstract
Reports of rescues and accidents in the White Mountains of New Hampshire from the cold seasons of 2025 opens with thoughts on how fast one’s hands can freeze. An experienced man, age 75, describes getting too cold on Cannon Mountain; he evaluates his own accident, and the editors weigh in at the end of the column. Two well-equipped women lose the Jewell Trail in deep snow and call for help, later sharing a six-point list of how to be safer next time. A 28-year-old man navigating high winds and deep snow by Google in a quest to see the sunrise on the Franconia Ridge ends up being evacuated by rescue helicopter. Teenagers suffer a lost boot, deteriorating weather, and navigation problems on a Presidential Range traverse. A climber falls from a ledge on Walpole, New Hampshire’s Mount Kilburn, requiring a litter carry to a helicopter. An experienced skier and trail advocate dies while scouting a route near the Cannon Balls ridge. Fast-rising waters in Franconia Brook trap a 19-year-old hiker attempting Owl’s Head. The editors comment on Richard Allmendinger’s Summer/Fall article on using cell phones to navigate.
