Aims & Scope

Alterity: The Dartmouth Journal of Intercultural Exchange was created to provide a medium through which undergraduate students can reflect on their diverse global experiences. Upon their return home, students often bury their abroad experiences deep into their mind and never truly take the time to extract meaning from them. This journal encourages undergraduate students to deeply reflect on their global experiences through the creation of written or artistic work. In doing so, students not only maximize their own cultural understanding and knowledge, but they are also able to share their unique perspectives with a broader community of students. In the global world that we live in we frequently come into contact with different cultures, traditions, and perspectives.

Thus, we use the word Alterity to emphasize the importance of being able to transcend our own cultural experiences and identities in order to understand the world from a different point of view. This is accomplished through reciprocal intercultural exchanges and the willingness to reflect on these diverse experiences. We advocate for the notion of global citizenship as an acknowledgment of the impact our individual actions have on diverse global communities. Ultimately, Alterity supports an interdisciplinary understanding of the world around us in order to promote cultural awareness and social responsibility.
