Abstract
This project is a report of Thayer School of Engineering’s submission to the Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon Design Competition, in the Attaching Housing Retrofit category. For this project we designed a retrofit of a multifamily home in Wilder, Vermont, considering local needs, energy efficiency, and building material sourcing. Our design choices meet the numerous criteria of the competition as well as our own goals. These choices include among other things, historical architectural styles, efficient HVAC technology, an envelope that meets Passive House standard, appliances that qualify for local rebates, and robust solar electric generation. Our final design has three diversely designed units, a HERS score of 38 before renewables and -3 after renewables, and has an annual utility bill of only $120. Our project qualified for the Solar Decathlon Final competition in April 2024.
