Abstract

The ENGS 90 team worked with their sponsor, General Abrasives, to design The Tabber Machine. The machine’s input is a pile of circular sandpaper discs and the output is a pile of discs with a sticker that functions as a peel-off tab for the paper backing. The ENGS 90 team built the first phase of the machine: an input rotary table with a linear actuator that indexes or pushes the discs upwards one by one. The Machine is PLC-controlled. The sticker mechanism and the mechanism to move the discs to the output rotary table after the sticker has been applied will be added later by the sponsor. The Tabber was designed to allow General Abrasives to through-cut multiple rolls of sandpaper into discs, thereby increasing production output as the current method only allows them to cut through one roll of sandpaper at a time, and apply a peel-off tab after the discs have been cut.
