Abstract
Standard audiometric tests require soundproof booths to attenuate background noise and ensure accurate test results. In order to bypass this requirement and increase access to audiometric tests in under resourced regions where soundproof booths may be absent, the company Creare has created the Wireless Audiometric Hearing Test System (W AHTSTM), which is a hearing assessment device that can interface with an open-source app named TabSINT to conduct boothless audiometric tests. TabSINT also interacts with a noise dosimeter (Svantek 104A) to ensure that ambient noises at different frequencies remain below acceptable limits. However, the SV 104A device is relatively costly, and thus the major goal of this project was to explore the feasibility of using the open-source Tympan Rev E device (a digital signal processing development board) as a low-cost replacement for the SV 104A. Firstly, the Tympan was validated as a Class 2 sound level meter by conducting tests on its microphone and referring to standards set forth by the International Electrotechnical Commission. Next, the TabSINT development environment was established on MacOS machines, and a comprehensive set up protocol document was compiled to aid future contributors to the project. Afterwards, the connection and data transmission between TabSINT and the Tympan was established using Bluetooth Low Energy, and UI features were created to display ambient noise data from the Tympan on TabSINT. A notification system was also implemented to trigger whenever ambient noise recordings from the Tympan exceed preset thresholds. Moreover, alternative TabSINT UI designs were considered to facilitate the app navigation process.
