Abstract
Tongue-Tie follows the life of the author through childhood to early adulthood. To situate the work, she returns to her village and the places in-between. There she encounters the realities of existing in survival while confronting the legacy of historic violence and its present manifestations. What emerges is language, body, and memory as witness-bearers even when she isn’t present – in body or mind. This meditation recreates and places the author in her present reality, whether by acceptance of what has happened or looking to nature to understand and reclaim lost generational knowledge or finding power in community.
