Abstract
The Roots of the Mango Tree: A Family Memoir is a collection of family portraits, including those individuals who played key roles in the Dominican Revolution throughout the 1950s and 60s. In this work, I explore the fluidity of memory and language in relation to cultural assimilation and preservation, and how memories shape my evolving self-perception. Through personal narrative, oral history, and historical research, with a focus on identity, language, and migration, I trace our family's journey from the postwar Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico, New York, and Maine. I have recounted some of the remarkable personal sacrifices and life experiences in this work from two perspectives: my own, born during revolution, and my mother’s, who is the last person with firsthand knowledge of historical sociopolitical events that shaped our family’s destiny.
