Abstract
This thesis is a comparative analysis of four socialist novels, two from Cuba and two from the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Both of the German works are by Christa Wolf, Der Geteilte Himmel (Divided Heaven, 1963) and Nachdenken aber Christa T. (The Quest for Christa T., 1968). The Cuban novels are Memorias del subdesarrollo (Inconsolable Memories-- literally, Memories of Underdevelopment, 1965) by Edmundo Desnoes, and La última mujer y el próximo combate (The Last Woman and the Next Battle, 1971) by Manuel Cofiño López. The goal of analysis is to try to understand the relationship between these works and socialism and also to try to determine-- through the works--the role each author assumes as a writer in a socialist society.
