Abstract
This lesson targets a college-aged audience with some prior coffee consumption experience, serving as an entry point into the technical conversation around coffee and coffee tasting. It aims to demystify the language of coffee professionals while enhancing appreciation for coffee culture. Students will explore how 2nd and 3rd wave coffee movements influenced mass-market chains like Starbucks and Blank Street Coffee. They will apply formal coffee terminology during a guided tasting and articulate their flavor preferences through peer-reviewed tasting notes. The lesson will be conducted in an informal setting, such as a café or roastery, to enrich the experiential learning process. Overall, students will deepen their understanding and enjoyment of coffee by learning to describe their tasting experiences meaningfully.
