Abstract

The Montgomery House is a Dartmouth-owned residence overlooking Occom Pond that is in need of energy upgrades in order to align with Dartmouth’s energy goals. The set of retrofit recommendations proposed in this report present an opportunity for the Montgomery Fellows Program to contribute to the reduction of global emissions. Based on billing data, house records, and a professional energy audit, our team created an energy model that captures the baseline energy consumption and sources of heat loss in the house. After deriving a list of retrofit recommendations through background research and expert consultation, each retrofit was evaluated using the energy model to calculate energy, carbon, and monetary savings. Further financial analysis included the use of a discounted cash flow (DCF) model to estimate the present value of each retrofit. After evaluating the logistics of implementing each retrofit and consulting our sponsor, we arrived at a finalized set of recommendations. Our final retrofit recommendations indicate that energy consumption in the house can be reduced by 71% through a series of heating, ventilation, and cooling (HV AC) systems and building envelope improvements: fixing HV AC system wiring, air sealing and weatherization, basement and attic insulation, and installation of a heat pump mini-split system. By improving the energy efficiency of the Montgomery House, this report demonstrates a pathway for upgrading legacy buildings while preserving their historical integrity and minimizing disruption to the occupant experience.
