Abstract

This thesis analyses the first three novels of Tom Robbins - Another Roadside Attraction, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues and Still Life With Woodpecker. Robbins' personal story which leads to the publication of his first novel is explored as well as how he fits into the American literary tradition. The author investigates how Robbins novels examine in a variety of ways the profound implications of contemporary physics for the moral and intellectual foundations of the Western world. It also examines Robbins uncanny ability to reflect in his novels the changing American moods from counterculture to activism to narcissism. Finally the thesis discusses Robbins verbal precision - the sheer novelty of his language and the consistent quality of his word play.
